Kabelo Mabalane has postponed his long-awaited album so that his late TKZee bandmate, Tokollo “Magesh” Tshabalala, can have the day to himself. Magesh would have turned 50 on 14 October 2026. The album, originally due the same day, will now arrive on 30 October.
The announcement
Mabalane shared the news in a nearly three-minute video filmed in a studio on Wednesday morning. He explained that the release date was no coincidence, but as tributes for Magesh poured into his DMs, it became clear the album should wait. In his words, the pause lets Magesh get his “full flowers without distraction,” and the new date is “FOR REAL THIS TIME.”
Remembering Magesh
In the video, Mabalane called Magesh “undoubtedly the greatest kwaito artist of all time” and “the greatest kwaito lyricist of all time.” He looked back to 1996, when the two friends sat behind Magesh’s mother’s house dreaming about the future. Everything they talked about, he said, eventually came true.
That memory gives new weight to a line Mabalane wrote in 2004: “1996 I was there and 2026 I’d still be there.” Three decades on, it reads as a statement of loyalty to the legacy they built together.
A birthday tribute track
To mark the day, Mabalane released “Ma Gash Is Beethoven,” a track from the upcoming album that is available for download now. The title reflects how he sees Magesh, as “the Beethoven of our generation.”
The legacy
Born on 14 October 1976, Magesh was one-third of TKZee, with Mabalane and Zwai Bala. The trio helped define the kwaito movement with songs such as “Phalafala,” “Shibobo” and “We Love This Place.” Magesh died on 15 August 2022, aged 45, following an epileptic seizure. His influence endures, and tributes continued to arrive on what would have been his milestone birthday.
