Orlando Pirates return to Betway Premiership action against Durban City. Here is the predicted starting XI and the key selection decisions facing Abdeslam Ouaddou.

Orlando Pirates return to Betway Premiership action this week, and coach Abdeslam Ouaddou could make several changes when the Sea Robbers face Durban City on Thursday.

After a demanding CAF Champions League qualifying trip to Mauritius, Pirates must quickly switch their attention back to domestic football.

The big question is how much rotation Ouaddou will make as the defending champions attempt to close the gap on league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Predicted Pirates XI vs Durban City

Our predicted Orlando Pirates lineup is:

Sipho Chaine; Kamohelo Sebelebele, Lebone Seema, Tapelo Xoki, Deon Hotto; Mthiyane, Dansin; Kabelo Kgositsile, Tshepang Selepe, Oswin Appollis; Yanela Mbuthuma.

The biggest selection decisions could come in defence and midfield following the long trip to Mauritius.

Pirates will want to manage player workloads while still fielding a side strong enough to maintain their push near the top of the Betway Premiership table.

Pirates Return to Domestic Action

The Sea Robbers have been away from league action while concentrating on their CAF Champions League qualifying campaign.

Their latest continental assignment saw them recover from a goal down against La Cure Waves FC before eventually securing a 3-1 victory.

Kabelo Kgositsile, Kamohelo Sebelebele and Yanela Mbuthuma were all on the scoresheet as Pirates booked their place in the next stage of the qualifying campaign.

Mbuthuma is particularly difficult to overlook after scoring three goals in his last three appearances.

Will Ouaddou Rotate?

Ouaddou now has to balance two competitions and the physical demands that come with continental travel.

The Pirates coach could therefore use the Durban City fixture to freshen up his team while maintaining enough attacking quality to secure another important league victory.

Sebelebele and Seema are among the players who could retain their places after featuring in Mauritius, while other positions could see adjustments depending on fitness and tactical requirements.

The predicted lineup also gives Appollis another important attacking role as Pirates look to create chances and continue their positive momentum.

Pirates Chasing Sundowns

The Betway Premiership table adds further significance to Thursday’s match.

Mamelodi Sundowns currently lead the standings with 20 points from eight matches, while Pirates sit second on 13 points but have played three games fewer.

AmaZulu are also on 13 points in third, while Kaizer Chiefs occupy fourth place with 12 points.

With three games in hand, Pirates know that consistent victories could dramatically change the title picture.

Ouaddou Wants Results Over Showboating

Ouaddou has also made his expectations clear when it comes to his team’s approach.

The Pirates boss has stressed that results must come before individual flair, warning that he will not tolerate a situation where showboating becomes more important than scoring goals and closing matches out.

That message was particularly relevant against La Cure Waves, where Pirates appeared to ease off after establishing a two-goal advantage before eventually finishing the match 3-1 ahead.

The Durban City clash will therefore provide another opportunity for Ouaddou’s players to demonstrate that they can combine attacking quality with the discipline needed to see games through.

What’s Your Pirates XI?

With domestic football back on the agenda, the selection debate is already underway.

Will Ouaddou make wholesale changes after the Mauritius trip, or will he trust the players who helped Pirates advance in the CAF Champions League?

Pirates face Durban City on Thursday, 17 September, with kick-off scheduled for 19:30.
