All Blacks icon TJ Perenara captains a star-studded Barbarians squad featuring 19 internationals from 11 countries to face the Springboks in Gqeberha.

The stage is officially set for an absolute rugby festival in Mzansi. Barbarians head coach Scott Robertson has unleashed a monstrous, cosmopolitan matchday squad to clash with the Springboks this Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha.

Leaning heavily into the rich, attacking tradition of the famous invitational club, Robertson has handed the captaincy armband to legendary former All Blacks scrumhalf TJ Perenara. He leads a blockbuster 23-man lineup weaponized with 19 Test-capped internationals representing 11 different nations—proving the Baa-Baas are not in South Africa just to make up the numbers.

The highly anticipated encounter kicks off at 15:00, serving as the main event of an epic double-header following the SA ‘A’ vs Zimbabwe curtain-raiser at 12:00.

A Backline Built for Pure Chaos

Robertson’s backline selection is a dream come true for rugby purists, combining lethal aerial skill, bruising midfield power, and local local knowledge:

THE BARBARIANS ATTACKING MATRIX
The Local X-Factor: Stormers maestro Warrick Gelant starts at fullback
The Aussie Edge: Wallabies star Andrew Kellaway patrols the wing
The Gridiron Wrecker: Scotland’s powerhouse Duhan van der Merwe clears boundaries
The Pivot: Argentine playmaker Tomás Albornoz pairs up with TJ Perenara

In the midfield, the explosive flair of former French international Virimi Vakatawa partners up with the hard-running Alex Nankivell to test the drift defense of Rassie Erasmus’s reshuffled backline.

Global Muscle in the Pack

Up front, the Baa-Baas have assembled a mobile, aggressive tight five and loose trio designed to disrupt the Springboks’ set-piece dominance. Argentina’s lineout king Guido Petti shifts down to the back row, linking up with New Zealand’s breakdown specialist Lachlan Boshier and Samoan powerhouse Miracle Fai’ilagi.

The second-row pairing features the towering Alex Moon alongside Los Pumas star Franco Molina, while an all-international front row of D’Arcy Rae, Elliot Dee, and Mayko Vivas prepares for an almighty scrum battle against Ox Nché and Carlü Sadie.

Adding further drama, the bench features former Springbok prop Oli Kebble, ready to square off against his countrymen, alongside flying Uruguayan scrumhalf Santiago Arata.

Scott Robertson on Embracing the Ethos:

“To play against the world champions in South Africa is an awesome opportunity. We have embraced the Barbarians spirit and tradition this week, coming together as a group and enjoying each other’s company in Cape Town… We want to express ourselves and do the famous black and white jersey proud.”
