It’s a celebration of new life for one of South Africa’s most admired power couples. Dr. Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh and his wife, Dr. Sumaya Hendricks, have officially welcomed their second child—a healthy baby boy—into the world.
The news comes as the couple approaches a major milestone for their firstborn, Hakim Thembekile Mpofu-Walsh, who celebrates his fourth birthday on April 22. Now, Hakim steps into the role of big brother just in time for his own special day.
A Partnership of Purpose
Married for 14 years, the couple has built a life centered on academic excellence and social impact. Their journey has been one of deep mutual respect; notably, the 37-year-old Mpofu-Walsh converted to Islam prior to their marriage, embracing the cultural and spiritual traditions of his wife’s family.
Both partners hold doctorates and lead influential careers:
- Dr. Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh: A lecturer in International Relations at Wits University, he is also a celebrated author, podcaster, and musician.
- Dr. Sumaya Hendricks: An expert in discourse and advocacy, she currently leads the Early Childhood Development (ECD) program at the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
Keeping it Private
While the couple shared the happy news of the birth on April 16, they have chosen to keep the name of their newest addition private for now. Fans and colleagues have flooded social media with well-wishes for the growing family, celebrating the arrival of another “little doctor” in the making.
