Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has called on the club’s players, management, technical team and supporters to stand together after Amakhosi suffered a 1-0 defeat to Zambia’s Red Arrows in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary-round tie.
The result leaves Chiefs needing a strong response in the return leg if they are to keep their hopes of reaching the competition’s group stages alive.
The defeat has increased scrutiny on Da Cruz and his team, particularly as Chiefs continue to search for consistency. The coach has appealed for patience and support, stressing that the club must remain united during this challenging period.
Da Cruz sends message to Chiefs supporters
Da Cruz acknowledged the frustration among supporters and urged them to get behind the team when the sides meet again.
“We know that they (fans) are not happy because in the PSL we don’t lose but we don’t win as well,” Da Cruz said.
“We lost but there is a second leg, and we need them at home to be behind us for us to win and qualify.”
The coach believes collective support will be vital as Amakhosi attempt to overturn the deficit and avoid an early exit from continental competition.
He also emphasised that unity across all levels of the club is essential, expressing optimism that improved results can follow.
“What is most important in this type of period is that we need to be together as staff, management, players, fans, and everyone to go through this period because after this period we will have better results.”
Tensions emerge after Zambia defeat
The pressure was evident after the final whistle, when Chiefs players Renaldo Leaner and Reeve Frosler were reportedly seen exchanging words before teammates and members of the technical team intervened.
The incident added to the difficult mood surrounding the team following a narrow defeat that leaves little room for error in the second leg.
According to the figures provided, Da Cruz has recorded three wins, two defeats and five draws in his first 10 matches in charge. That record highlights the challenge facing the coach as he attempts to establish consistency and build momentum.
What should Kaizer Chiefs do with Da Cruz?
The return leg could prove important for both Chiefs’ continental ambitions and Da Cruz’s position in the dugout. A strong performance and qualification would ease some of the pressure, while another disappointing result could intensify questions about the team’s direction.
For now, Da Cruz is asking for unity rather than division. However, supporters will ultimately want to see that appeal translated into improved performances and results on the pitch.
