Mamelodi Sundowns have taken full advantage of Orlando Pirates’ absence from domestic action, climbing to the top of the Betway Premiership after securing a dramatic 2-1 victory over Golden Arrows on Sunday.
With Pirates away from home on CAF Champions League duty, Sundowns knew that three points at King Zwelithini Stadium would give them the opportunity to move ahead of the defending champions.
The Brazilians did exactly that — although they had to work hard for it.
Ndlovu gives Sundowns an early advantage
Miguel Cardoso’s side made a fast start and took the lead in the 14th minute.
Former Golden Arrows attacker Siyanda Ndlovu found the back of the net to open his Sundowns scoring account, giving the visitors a valuable advantage against his former club.
Sundowns managed to protect their lead until half-time, but Golden Arrows returned from the break with renewed determination.
The home side increased the pressure and eventually found their reward.
Junior Dion brings Arrows level
With just 14 minutes remaining, Junior Dion restored parity for Golden Arrows.
The reigning Golden Boot winner showed his finishing quality once again, giving the hosts hope of claiming at least a point from the encounter.
Suddenly, Sundowns were facing the possibility of dropping two valuable points in their pursuit of top spot.
But the Brazilians refused to settle.
Mokoena delivers another late blow
Sundowns pushed forward in search of a winner, and their persistence finally paid off in the 88th minute.
Teboho Mokoena stepped up when his team needed him most, unleashing a long-range effort that beat the Golden Arrows defence and gave Sundowns a crucial 2-1 lead.
There was little time left for Arrows to respond, and Sundowns held on to claim all three points.
Sundowns move above Orlando Pirates
The victory takes Sundowns to 16 points from six matches, moving them to the summit of the Betway Premiership.
Orlando Pirates, meanwhile, remain on 13 points from five matches after their domestic fixture was affected by their CAF Champions League commitments.
The table therefore remains extremely competitive, with Pirates holding a game in hand.
Nevertheless, Sundowns will be delighted to have capitalised on the opportunity presented to them.
The title race is already heating up
Sunday’s result adds another intriguing layer to what could become a fascinating title battle.
Sundowns have demonstrated their ability to grind out results even when they are pushed hard, while Pirates will know that their continental commitments could make managing their domestic campaign increasingly challenging.
With just six matches played for Sundowns, it is far too early to make definitive predictions about the title.
But one thing is clear: the Brazilians are already sending a message.
They saw an opportunity to move to the top of the table — and they took it.
The question now is whether Pirates can respond when they return to domestic action.
