Orlando Pirates were held to a surprise 0–0 draw by La Cure Waves in their CAF Champions League opener. The Buccaneers must now finish the job at home.

Orlando Pirates were held to a frustrating 0–0 draw by La Cure Waves in their opening CAF Champions League encounter on Sunday, with the Mauritian champions producing a disciplined defensive performance to silence the Betway Premiership champions.

Pirates travelled to the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex in Saint Pierre as the clear favourites, particularly after making a strong start to their domestic campaign.

Instead of returning home with an advantage, however, the Buccaneers were forced to settle for a stalemate that leaves their continental campaign finely balanced.

Pirates dominate possession but lack cutting edge

The Soweto giants controlled large periods of the match, but possession did not translate into enough clear-cut opportunities.

La Cure Waves defended in numbers and maintained a compact shape, frustrating Pirates whenever they attempted to play through the defensive block.

The Mauritian side showed little fear against their more fancied opponents and remained organised throughout the opening half.

Pirates struggled to find the decisive final pass, while their finishing also let them down when opportunities did arrive.

The teams therefore went into the interval locked at 0–0.

La Cure Waves stand firm after the break

Pirates attempted to change the momentum in the second half, with Yanela Mbuthuma introduced shortly after the hour mark in place of Boitumelo Radiopane.

The substitution offered the Buccaneers additional attacking energy, but La Cure Waves remained difficult to break down.

Whenever Pirates threatened to build momentum, the hosts slowed the game and reorganised defensively.

The longer the match remained goalless, the greater the belief appeared to grow within the La Cure Waves camp.

Pirates ultimately failed to find the breakthrough, and the final whistle confirmed a 0–0 draw.

Pirates now face pressure in the second leg

The result is undoubtedly a missed opportunity for Orlando Pirates.

As the reigning Betway Premiership champions, the Buccaneers would have expected to put themselves in a stronger position before returning home.

Instead, they now have to win the second leg to avoid their Champions League campaign becoming unnecessarily complicated.

The return fixture at Orlando Amstel Arena provides Pirates with home advantage, but they will need a considerably more clinical attacking performance.

A single goal could completely change the tie, but La Cure Waves have already demonstrated that they are capable of frustrating the Buccaneers.

La Cure Waves earn a valuable result

For the Mauritian champions, holding Pirates to a goalless draw represents an impressive result.

They successfully neutralised one of South Africa’s leading clubs and head into the second leg knowing that they have given themselves a genuine chance of progressing.

Pirates, meanwhile, will have to find solutions in attack.

The pressure is now firmly on the Buccaneers: win at home or risk a shock early exit from the CAF Champions League.
