Steve Komphela is reportedly involved in an alleged post-match clash with Wiliete SC coach Beto Bianchi in Angola. Sundowns and CAF have yet to comment.

Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Steve Komphela has reportedly been involved in a post-match altercation with Wiliete SC head coach Beto Bianchi in Angola, with reports claiming that the Brazilian coach was taken to hospital.

The alleged incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, 18 October, following Sundowns’ goalless draw against Wiliete SC in the CAF Champions League.

According to reports from African football journalists, the confrontation may have followed an alleged racial insult directed at Komphela. The claims suggest that the Sundowns assistant coach responded physically, but the circumstances surrounding the incident have not been independently confirmed.

Beto Bianchi reportedly taken to hospital

Bianchi, who joined the Angolan club in July, was reportedly injured during the alleged confrontation and taken to a local hospital for medical attention.

The Wiliete SC coach was also absent from the mandatory post-match press conference. His assistant reportedly addressed the media and confirmed that Bianchi had been hospitalised.

Ghanaian football journalist Micky Jr also reported the alleged incident on X, stating that Bianchi had been involved in a clash with Komphela and had subsequently been taken to hospital.

However, the full sequence of events remains unclear, and the allegations against Komphela have not been officially established.

Sundowns, Wiliete SC and CAF yet to comment

Neither Mamelodi Sundowns nor Wiliete SC had issued an official statement on the reported confrontation at the time of publication. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) had also not announced a formal disciplinary investigation.

Any potential disciplinary action would depend on the verified facts, the applicable competition regulations and the findings of any investigation.

Until an official account is released, the reported incident remains an allegation rather than an established finding of misconduct.

What could happen if the allegations are proven?

If the incident is confirmed and Komphela is found to have breached the relevant regulations, disciplinary consequences could follow under the applicable CAF rules.

Depending on the findings and the nature of any offence, possible sanctions could include a suspension, a fine or other disciplinary measures. The severity of any punishment would depend on the specific charge, the evidence and the relevant regulations.

No official sanction against Komphela had been announced in the report provided.

Sundowns prepare for the return leg

Despite the reported controversy, Mamelodi Sundowns are expected to turn their attention to the return fixture against Wiliete SC.

The second leg is scheduled for Friday, 23 October, at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, with kick-off set for 20:00.

After a 0-0 draw in Angola, Sundowns will need a strong performance at home to secure progress in the CAF Champions League.

Sundowns’ recent CAF Champions League record

Sundowns have enjoyed a strong run in Africa’s premier club competition over the past decade, including winning the title in 2016 and 2026 and reaching the final in 2025.

Their listed finishes from 2015/16 to 2025/26 include several quarter-final and semi-final appearances, underlining the club’s continued presence among Africa’s leading teams.

For now, attention remains on the reported incident involving Komphela and Bianchi, with further clarity expected if either club or CAF releases an official statement
