The raw talent is undeniable, but the numbers haven’t followed—yet. Asanele Velebayi, the 23-year-old speedster who joined Kaizer Chiefs amid much fanfare in August, has made a candid admission about his start to life at Naturena.
Known for his blistering pace and fearless dribbling, the former Cape Town Spurs star has become a regular feature in the Amakhosi lineup. However, as he prepares for today’s crucial clash against Durban City, Velebayi is the first to admit that his “final product” remains a work in progress.
The Journey So Far: From Courtrooms to the Pitch
Velebayi’s transition to the Glamour Boys was anything but smooth. A prolonged legal dispute between Chiefs and Cape Town Spurs delayed his debut until October, meaning the winger has had to play catch-up since the season began.
Velebayi’s Chiefs Tenure by the Numbers:
- Appearances: 8 (all competitions)
- Goals: 0
- Assists: 0
- Key Traits: High-speed directness, successful take-ons, and confidence in 1v1 situations.

In His Own Words: Seeking the “End Product”
Speaking ahead of the Sunday showdown at FNB Stadium, the Phillipi-born winger showed maturity beyond his years, acknowledging that style must now be met with substance.
“I have individual goals I set for myself and requirements from the coach,” Velebayi admitted. “I know the statistics are not on my side. The goal I have set for myself is to score more. I have been trying to create but for me, now I need to score.”
Why Today Matters
With the club currently navigating a massive injury crisis—sidelining attackers like Etiosa Ighodaro and Mfundo Vilakazi—the responsibility to provide a spark falls on Velebayi’s shoulders. Against a disciplined Durban City side, his ability to turn a successful dribble into a goal-scoring opportunity could be the difference-maker for Co-Coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze .
