South African football fans are in for an unusual Friday night as Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates take centre stage in continental competition.
The two giants will play their respective CAF matches just two hours apart, giving supporters the rare opportunity to watch both Amakhosi and the Buccaneers in action without a broadcast clash.
Kaizer Chiefs kick off at 18:00, before Orlando Pirates take to the field at 20:00.
Chiefs face fightback mission in Durban
Kaizer Chiefs will open the evening at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban when they host Zambia’s Red Arrows in the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary-round tie.
Amakhosi have work to do after suffering a 1-0 defeat in the first leg away from home.
The Soweto club therefore needs to overturn the deficit on home soil to keep its hopes of reaching the lucrative CAF Confederation Cup group stages alive.
The match will be broadcast live on SABC 3, with coverage beginning at 17:30 ahead of the 18:00 kick-off.
For Chiefs, the equation is simple: win by the required margin and they advance, while another disappointing result could bring their continental campaign to an early end.
Pirates take advantage into Champions League clash
Two hours later, attention switches to the CAF Champions League as Orlando Pirates welcome African Stars to the Orlando Amstel Arena.
The Buccaneers enter the second leg in a more comfortable position after recording a 1-0 away victory in the first meeting.
Tshepang Moremi scored the decisive goal, giving Pirates a narrow advantage to defend in front of their home supporters.
Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side will now be aiming to finish the job and secure passage to the next round.
The Pirates match will be shown live on SABC 2, with coverage starting at 19:00.
A rare Friday night for South African football
Friday night football in South Africa is more commonly associated with domestic Betway Premiership action.
This week’s continental double-header, however, gives supporters a different kind of spectacle.
Even more importantly, the staggered kick-off times mean fans won’t have to choose between watching Chiefs and Pirates.
That is particularly welcome given the criticism surrounding the domestic fixture schedule, with Chiefs, Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns all due to play their Carling Knockout last-16 matches at 19:00 on Tuesday, 27 October.
For one Friday night, at least, South African football fans get a continental double dose without having to reach for the remote at the same time.
Chiefs chasing a comeback, Pirates protecting a lead
The two Soweto giants enter Friday’s matches with very different objectives.
Kaizer Chiefs: overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit against Red Arrows.
Orlando Pirates: protect their 1-0 advantage against African Stars.
With both clubs chasing progress in CAF competition, Friday could prove a decisive night for their continental ambitions.
The big question is: Can Chiefs complete the comeback, while Pirates finish the job?
