The Sharks have reportedly joined the race for Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx, a development that could complicate the Bulls’ attempt to bring the double Rugby World Cup winner back to South Africa.
A New Suitor in Durban
According to Sunday reports, the Sharks are exploring a move for the 32-year-old, who is contracted to Japan’s Kubota Spears until June 2027. The Bulls have not hidden their interest and have reportedly been chasing his signature for around two months. Now their URC rivals may be competing for him.
Why the Sharks Need a Hooker
Uncertainty at the position is driving the interest. Bongi Mbonambi’s future is reportedly unclear, as he is said to face an internal disciplinary hearing over alleged misconduct during a Sharks team-building session. Fellow hooker Fez Mbatha is also dealing with a leg injury.
Coach JP Pietersen, general manager Dave Williams and head of recruitment and retention Ruan Jacobs have reportedly already discussed signing Marx.
The Contract Question
Marx’s Japanese deal runs until June 2027, so any move would depend on his existing agreement and whether his release can be arranged.
The Player They Want
Marx was part of South Africa’s Rugby World Cup-winning squads in 2019 and 2023. He has played 94 Tests and scored a record 29 tries for a South African forward. He is the reigning World Rugby Player of the Year and SA Rugby Player of the Year, and many regard him as the best hooker in the world.
