Usimamane opens up about his real personality, hip-hop persona, upbringing and why his upcoming album Tai Lung needed to embrace a stronger South African identity.

Usimamane is taking a more deliberate approach to his next chapter, revealing that his upcoming album Tai Lung is not only a continuation of his previous musical direction but also a statement about where he wants to establish himself first: South Africa.

Speaking to Hype Magazine, the rapper explained that Tai Lung represents the most complete version of an idea he had been developing earlier this year. The project reportedly went through two discarded versions before Usimamane settled on the final concept and sound.

Usimamane Wanted Tai Lung To Be More South African

One of the biggest creative decisions behind the album was Usimamane’s choice to focus on his home country rather than immediately chasing an international audience.

The rapper said he feels he is still at an early stage in his career and wants to spend more time building his name in South Africa before turning his attention to global ambitions.

“I just feel like I’m still too young for all of that international whatever,” Usimamane explained. “I just wanted to be South African, like with my second sophomore album.”

For the rapper, the decision is less about rejecting international opportunities and more about establishing a strong foundation at home.

“I just wanted to be, like, I don’t know, man, just be here for a little, make my name out here,” he added.

That mindset gives Tai Lung a distinctly local purpose: Usimamane wants the album to strengthen his connection with the culture and audience that helped shape his artistic identity.

Betrayal Is At The Heart Of Tai Lung

Beyond its South African identity, Tai Lung is anchored by a deeply personal theme: betrayal.

Usimamane drew a connection between himself and the Kung Fu Panda character Tai Lung, particularly through the experience of people turning against you.

“Betrayal,” he said when asked about the connection between the character and his own story. “People flipping on him. They also flipped on me.”

The rapper explained that the feeling extends beyond specific individuals, saying he has experienced betrayal through “a lot of things” in his life.

Those experiences have found their way into the album, including moments surrounding heartbreak, personal loss and the death of people close to him.

Usimamane Embraces Vulnerability

While revealing personal experiences through music can be uncomfortable, Usimamane says he has become increasingly comfortable with vulnerability.

The rapper believes his willingness to put difficult truths on record is part of what makes his music distinctive. He suggested that some of the stories he shares might be difficult for other people to discuss openly if they experienced similar situations.

For Usimamane, that discomfort is not necessarily a weakness. It can become a source of connection.

His approach reflects a broader understanding of hip-hop and amapiano culture, where unexpected honesty and deeply personal moments can sometimes become the most memorable parts of a project.

Tai Lung Will Show Different Sides Of Usimamane

Despite the album’s emotional subject matter, Usimamane is not abandoning the sound that helped establish him.

The rapper remains rooted in trap and his street-oriented approach, but Tai Lung is designed to move between different moods and perspectives.

Listeners will hear when the rapper is being serious, when he is focused on trap, and when he simply wants to have fun.

“You will see when it’s time to be serious. You will see when it’s time to trap, make fun, you know, have fun and all of that,” he explained.

That balance allows the album to function as both a personal story and a showcase of Usimamane’s versatility.

A Personal And Spiritual Chapter

Alongside betrayal, heartbreak and ambition, Usimamane said Tai Lung also has a spiritual dimension.

The project ultimately reflects the experiences people go through while incorporating what he described as “giving grace to the Lord.”

That combination of street realism, vulnerability, spirituality and South African identity could make Tai Lung an important step in Usimamane’s evolution.

Rather than rushing to position himself as an international artist, Usimamane is choosing to build from home first.

With Tai Lung, he appears determined to tell his story on his own terms — embracing his South African identity, confronting betrayal, allowing himself to be vulnerable and maintaining the trap sound that has become central to his artistry.
