Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso questions refereeing decisions after a 4-1 win over Durban City sends his side back to the top of the PSL.

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has described the night as a dark moment for South African football, expressing frustration over decisions he believes went against his team during their 4-1 victory over Durban City.

Mamelodi Sundowns returned to the top of the Betway Premiership after producing an impressive 4-1 victory over Durban City, but head coach Miguel Cardoso was far from satisfied with everything that happened at the stadium.

Despite his team’s convincing performance, the Portuguese tactician used his post-match interview with SuperSport TV to question the officiating, suggesting that Sundowns had been denied penalty decisions.

Cardoso appeared visibly frustrated and chose his words carefully, but his comments made it clear that he was unhappy with the match officials.

Cardoso calls it a dark night for South African football

The Sundowns coach said the match had left him with mixed emotions, particularly because of what he considered questionable decisions against his team.

“Today is a day of a lot of emotions. I will make my best efforts to shut up and not speak too much. I think it’s another dark night for South Africa, but let people think whatever,” Cardoso told SuperSport TV.

He went on to suggest that the officials should review the incidents involving potential penalties for Sundowns.

“Honest people that work hard, even here today you should go look at the penalties that were taken from Sundowns. I don’t want to speak too much, but whoever has a conscience today should, before going to sleep, pray a little bit and think a little bit more together,” he added.

His remarks are likely to generate debate among football supporters, particularly regarding the standard of officiating in the domestic league.

However, Cardoso did not allow his frustration to overshadow the efforts of his players, acknowledging the quality of the performance and the contribution of the opposition.

Matuludi leads Sundowns’ impressive performance

On the pitch, Sundowns demonstrated their attacking strength against Eric Tinkler’s Durban City.

Thabang Matuludi was one of the standout performers, scoring twice to help the Tshwane giants secure an important victory.

Iqraam Rayners and Antonio Van Wyk also got on the scoresheet, while Durban City managed to find the net once in a difficult evening against the defending giants.

Cardoso praised both teams and acknowledged the importance of the result, while also highlighting the contribution of the supporters and the quality of the playing surface.

“Look, my team deserves everything but the same respect for Durban City today. Our boys put the intensity. We profit, obviously, from freshness as we have a chance to change a lot of players from the previous match,” he said.

The coach also congratulated the fans and stadium management for their contribution to the occasion.

Sundowns return to the top of the Betway Premiership

The victory moved Sundowns back to the top of the league standings, one point ahead of Orlando Pirates.

With the two South African giants separated by such a narrow margin, the title race is shaping up to be another closely contested battle.

Cardoso believes the competitiveness of the league could produce a finish similar to last season’s campaign.

“Look, if the league is played like we saw today, there won’t be a lot of story, we’ll have a league like last year,” he said.

For Sundowns, the immediate priority will be maintaining their momentum and protecting their position at the summit.

But Cardoso’s post-match comments have introduced another talking point: the officiating standards and the decisions that continue to attract scrutiny in South African football.

Were Cardoso’s complaints about the refereeing justified, or should the Sundowns coach have focused entirely on his team’s convincing victory?
