Mamelodi Sundowns have become the first team to secure a place in the Carling Knockout semi-finals after claiming a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday night.

The Brazilians continued their impressive run in the competition, showing patience, tactical discipline and attacking quality to overcome a stubborn Golden Arrows side.

Head coach Miguel Cardoso made several changes to his starting line-up, with one eye on the upcoming CAF Super Cup final. Following their convincing victory over Durban City last weekend, only goalkeeper Ricardo Goss and midfielder Bathusi Aubaas retained their starting positions.

Despite the changes, Sundowns remained determined to get the job done.

Ndlovu comes close as Sundowns search for breakthrough

The first real opportunity of the match arrived in the 14th minute when Siyanda Ndlovu showcased his attacking ability.

The Sundowns youngster beat his marker before unleashing a powerful effort that crashed against the crossbar, giving Golden Arrows an early warning.

Sundowns continued to look for openings, but Golden Arrows remained organised defensively.

Towards the end of the first half, Bafana Bafana striker Iqraam Rayners delivered an inviting ball into the box for Antonio van Wyk. However, the winger could not direct his header on target despite having a good opportunity to open the scoring.

Rayners delivers after Cardoso’s triple substitution

The second half initially produced little attacking excitement, prompting Cardoso to make changes in the 65th minute.

The Sundowns coach introduced Sphelele Mkhulise, Thapelo Morena and Arthur Sales, replacing Marcelo Allende, Cassius Mailula and Thabang Matuludi.

The tactical adjustments quickly paid dividends.

Just two minutes after the substitutions, Sundowns finally found the breakthrough. Rayners rose to meet a cross from Van Wyk and guided a header into the back of the net to put the home side 1-0 ahead.

It was a decisive moment that shifted the momentum firmly in Sundowns’ favour.

Sundowns defensive wall denies Golden Arrows

Golden Arrows enjoyed spells of possession as they attempted to find an equaliser, but Sundowns remained disciplined at the back.

Defenders Mothobi Mvala and Malibongwe Khoza were particularly effective in limiting the attacking threat, keeping Dion under close watch and preventing Arrows from creating meaningful opportunities in dangerous areas.

Sundowns managed the closing stages professionally, protecting their advantage until the final whistle.

Brazilians become first Carling Knockout semi-finalists

The 1-0 victory confirms Mamelodi Sundowns as the first club to qualify for the Carling Knockout semi-finals.

With Cardoso successfully rotating his squad while maintaining the team’s winning momentum, the Brazilians will now turn their attention to the next challenge.

Meanwhile, attention shifts to the remaining quarter-final fixtures, with traditional rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates among the teams still chasing a place in the last four.

Sundowns have made their statement. Who will join them in the Carling Knockout semi-finals?
