Can Fernando Da Cruz turn things around at Kaizer Chiefs, or is the Amakhosi job proving too demanding?

Fernando Da Cruz is facing growing scrutiny at Kaizer Chiefs following a disappointing start to the 2026/27 campaign. With the club already trailing the Betway Premiership leaders by a significant margin, questions are being asked about his tactical approach, team selections and ability to get the best out of his squad.

The big question now is whether Da Cruz has enough time to change the mood around Naturena — or whether his position could become increasingly uncertain before Christmas.

What does Da Cruz bring to Kaizer Chiefs?

Da Cruz arrived with a reputation for tactical organisation, defensive discipline and a structured approach to the game.

His preferred system at Chiefs has featured a back three, two wing-backs and a midfield pivot, with a 3-4-2-1 formation allowing the attacking players additional freedom in the final third.

However, implementing that system has not been straightforward. Injuries to regular midfield options Lebo Maboe and Siphesihle Ndlovu have disrupted the coach’s plans and limited his choices in the middle of the park.

Learning from Marcelo Bielsa

One of Da Cruz’s notable coaching credentials is his experience working alongside legendary Argentine tactician Marcelo Bielsa at French club Lille.

Da Cruz had three spells at Lille, taking on different responsibilities as a scout, caretaker manager and head coach of the club’s reserve side.

During his time there, he was involved in the development environment of several notable players, including Idrissa Gueye, Lucas Digne, Victor Osimhen and Eden Hazard.

That background suggests Da Cruz has valuable experience in talent identification and player development. The challenge is translating those qualities into consistent results at one of South Africa’s biggest football clubs.

Young players are getting opportunities

One area where Da Cruz appears to have delivered on his promise is the use of younger players.

Mfundo Vilakazi has accumulated 746 minutes this season, making him one of the most regularly used players in the squad. Only Brandon Petersen, Inacio Miguel and Lebo Maboe have featured for longer, according to the figures in the original report.

Other youngsters have also received opportunities:

  • Luke Baartman: 480 minutes.
  • Wandile Duba: 476 minutes.
  • Mdu Shabalala: 442 minutes.

Duba, in particular, appears to be earning the coach’s confidence through his performances and growing involvement.

There has been less luck for Langelihle Phili, whose debut season has been disrupted by a serious ankle injury.

The minutes given to these young players suggest Da Cruz is willing to trust emerging talent. But at Chiefs, developing promising youngsters is only part of the job. Results and performances are also expected.

Is Kaizer Chiefs already out of the title race?

The pressure is intensified by the league standings.

Chiefs are reportedly 12 points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns after just nine matches. That is a sizeable gap at such an early stage of the campaign, and it leaves little room for further dropped points.

The situation raises difficult questions. Does Da Cruz have the right players to make his system work? Are the squad’s younger talents ready to carry greater responsibility? Or is the coach failing to get enough out of the resources available to him?

There may be no simple answer, but the expectations at Naturena are unmistakable.

How long will Da Cruz get?

Da Cruz has coaching experience, a clear tactical philosophy and a willingness to give young players opportunities. Those are positive foundations.

However, Kaizer Chiefs is a club where patience can quickly run out when results do not meet expectations. The pressure is not simply about implementing a playing style — it is about delivering performances that match the stature and ambitions of the club.

With the title challenge already looking difficult, the coming weeks could prove crucial for the coach.
