Percy Tau remains a free agent after leaving Vietnam and has gone more than three months without playing. Could the former Bafana star retire?

Former Bafana Bafana forward Percy Tau is facing an uncertain period in his career after going more than three months without playing competitive football.

The 32-year-old is back in South Africa after leaving Vietnamese side Thep Xanh Nam Dinh FC in May and is currently without a club.

That has raised an uncomfortable question: what comes next for Tau?

Tau’s search for a fresh start continues

Tau joined Nam Dinh hoping to revive his career after a difficult final period at Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly.

His stint in Vietnam, however, lasted only around five months and produced just one goal.

Before that move, Tau had enjoyed a largely successful four-year spell with Al Ahly. Changes on the coaching front eventually saw his role reduced, with the forward increasingly coming off the bench.

His reduced playing time also affected his international career. Tau eventually fell out of the Bafana Bafana setup and missed South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.

Where could Tau go from here?

With the new Betway Premiership season already underway, Tau remains a free agent.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns star has indicated that he would be open to returning to the PSL, potentially giving him an opportunity to rebuild his confidence and rediscover the form that once made him one of South Africa’s most exciting attacking players.

However, a move to one of the country’s traditional giants could prove difficult.

Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns already have considerable attacking options, meaning Tau could struggle to guarantee the regular football he needs.

A move to another Premiership club could therefore make more sense if his priority is playing consistently.

Retirement now a possibility?

At 32, Tau still has time to make a comeback, provided he can regain his fitness and match sharpness.

But after months without competitive action, his next decision could be one of the most important of his career.

Does Tau take another opportunity to rebuild his career in the PSL or abroad, or has the former Bafana star reached the point where retirement is becoming a realistic option?

For a player who once carried enormous expectations in South African football, the next few months could determine whether we see Percy Tau back on the pitch or quietly bring the curtain down on his playing career.
