South Africa’s national football team, Bafana Bafana, have received another major recognition on the African football stage after being nominated for the 2026 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards.
The nomination places South Africa among the continent’s leading national teams, with Bafana Bafana shortlisted in the Men’s National Team of the Year category.
CAF announced the nominees on Tuesday evening, with South Africa set to compete against Morocco, Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo for the prestigious award.
The recognition comes as a reward for the national team’s impressive performances and growing reputation in African football.
Bafana Bafana Receive Recognition for Their Progress
Bafana Bafana’s nomination reflects the significant progress the team has made in recent years.
Under Belgian coach Hugo Broos, South Africa rebuilt their international reputation and established themselves as a competitive force on the continent.
One of the biggest achievements during Broos’ tenure was securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending the country’s 24-year wait for a place at the tournament through qualification.
South Africa also impressed during their qualifying campaign, finishing top of Group C ahead of continental giants Nigeria.
Their performances strengthened confidence among supporters and demonstrated the progress made under the Belgian tactician.
The team’s growing success has also helped restore excitement around South African international football.
Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates Players Play Key Roles
The strength of the current Bafana Bafana squad has largely been built around players competing in the domestic Premier Soccer League.
Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates have been particularly important in supplying quality players to the national team.
Their contribution highlights the importance of local football in developing players capable of competing at the highest international level.
With several PSL stars making important contributions, Bafana Bafana have demonstrated that locally based talent can compete with some of Africa’s strongest football nations.
2026 CAF Awards Ceremony Set for December
The 2026 CAF Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in Lagos, Nigeria, on Monday, 7 December.
Bafana Bafana will be hoping to turn their nomination into a major achievement by winning the Men’s National Team of the Year award.
Competition will be tough, particularly with Morocco, Senegal and DR Congo also included among the nominees.
Nevertheless, the nomination itself represents an important milestone for South African football and recognition of the national team’s progress.
Bafana Bafana Turn Attention to AFCON 2027 Qualifiers
While the CAF Awards nomination has provided another reason for celebration, attention is also shifting towards the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
According to the supplied report, Bafana Bafana have made a strong start under new coach Pitso Mosimane, recording victories against Guinea and Eritrea.
South Africa defeated Guinea 2-1 before producing an emphatic 5-0 victory over Eritrea.
Their next challenge is a double-header against Kenya, with matches scheduled for 13 and 17 November.
The upcoming fixtures will provide another opportunity for the national team to build momentum and strengthen their position in the AFCON qualification campaign.
For South African supporters, the CAF nomination is another encouraging sign that Bafana Bafana are gaining recognition and respect across the African continent.
