Alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi Matlala, widely known as “Cat”, has returned to the Johannesburg High Court as his long-running criminal case moves forward to a pre-trial hearing.
The 49-year-old appeared in court with four co-accused, including his wife Tsakani Matlala.
They face serious charges including attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder and money laundering.
The charges are linked to an alleged plot targeting Matlala’s former girlfriend, socialite Tebogo Thobejane, along with other violent incidents believed to have happened between 2022 and 2024.
The case has faced several delays over the past few years.
Matlala’s lawyers previously argued that his detention at eBongweni Supermax Prison made it difficult for them to properly prepare for trial.
They claim the high-security prison limits their ability to consult with him.
Matlala is also challenging his transfer to the prison, which has slowed down the legal process.
With the pre-trial hearing now underway, both the State and defence are expected to resolve remaining issues as the case moves closer to a full trial.
