The Junior Springboks have been forced to shake up their leadership structure just hours before flying out to defend their global crown. Dynamic hooker Siphosethu Mnebelele has officially been named the new captain for the upcoming World Rugby U20 Championship in Georgia.
Mnebelele steps into the role to replace regular skipper Riley Norton, who—in a massive testament to the South African rugby pathway—was fast-tracked straight into Rassie Erasmus’s senior Springbok squad for the incoming Nations Championship.
Squad Reshuffle: Rassie Plucks the Jewels
Norton wasn’t the only Junior Bok star called up to the big leagues. Electric playmaker Vusi Moyo was also drafted into the senior national setup following an explosive pre-season window.
To offset these major personnel losses, Junior Bok head coach Kevin Foote has reshuffled his traveling party with high-quality reinforcements:
- Thomas Beling (utility forward) joins the squad to fill the massive void left by Norton.
- Cheswill Jooste (wing) steps in to replace the senior-bound Moyo.
- Akahluwa Boqwana (wing) has been drafted into the touring squad for Zekhethelo Siyaya, who unfortunately suffered a concussion and facial injury during a freak collision against Zimbabwe.
In a slight disciplinary setback, flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed will travel with the team but is suspended for the first two group matches after his yellow card against Zimbabwe was upgraded to a 20-minute red card.
“Suffering from Success” — Coach Foote Celebrates the Promotions
While losing your captain and star backline player on the eve of a World Championship would panic most coaches, Foote insists the entire setup is buzzing with pride.
“Everyone in the Junior Bok setup is delighted for Riley and Vusi, and we wish them well for the Nations Championship,” Foote said. “It is every young player’s dream to represent the Springboks, and they thoroughly deserve their opportunity. Injuries and call-ups to senior honours are part of the game. Fortunately, we planned for these scenarios, and the players brought into the squad are well integrated into our environment.”
The Title Defense: Junior Boks Schedule in Georgia
South Africa enters the tournament as defending world champions, boasting a core group of five returning winners from last year’s historic triumph in Italy (Reid, Kubheka, Mnebelele, Jooste, and Felix).
The Junior Boks are slotted into a competitive Pool A and will be based entirely out of Tbilisi.
