Zimbabwean journalist Hopewell Chin’ono explains why he is supporting Bafana Bafana in the World Cup opener despite social media calls for an African boycott.

As the entire African continent tunes in for Bafana Bafana’s highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against Mexico tonight, a fierce debate is brewing off the pitch.

In recent weeks, rising online tensions and anti-foreigner rhetoric surrounding undocumented migration campaigns in South Africa have led some African football fans on social media to vow to support Mexico as a form of protest.

However, award-winning Zimbabwean journalist and activist Hopewell Chin’ono has firmly broken ranks, explaining in a powerful statement why his allegiance lies strictly with South Africa tonight.

The Boycott Debate vs. Reality

The online backlash stems from recent, highly vocal protests demanding undocumented migrants leave South Africa by June 30. Outraged by isolated incidents and harsh rhetoric, some continental fans declared they would back Mexico out of spite.

Chin’ono completely rejects this logic, arguing that it is unfair to judge an entire nation by the loud voices of a few.

“I cannot support Mexico simply because a small minority of South Africans have insulted me or made offensive remarks about Africans. That would be neither logical nor fair,” Chin’ono stated.

Why Chin’ono is Standing with Mzansi

For the veteran journalist, his connection to South Africa transcends ninety minutes on a football pitch. He highlights several key reasons for his stance:

  • A Place of Sanctuary: Chin’ono notes that South Africa has historically provided safety, refuge, and career opportunities for himself during difficult times, as it has for millions of other Africans.
  • The Silent Majority: He emphasizes that the ability of millions of foreign nationals to peacefully live, study, work, and raise families in South Africa proves that the vast majority of citizens are decent, welcoming people.
  • Rejecting Extremism: Every society has its bigots and troublemakers, Chin’ono warns, but letting extremists define a whole country is a dangerous mistake.

Football as a Unifier

While acknowledging that everyone has the right to support whichever team they please, Chin’ono urges football fans to separate politics and the actions of a toxic minority from the spirit of the game.

“South Africa has given me a home, opportunities, and safety,” he concluded. “Judge people as individuals, not an entire country by the actions of a few.”
