London-based South African star Toya Delazy has sparked a viral conversation about the realities of being an independent artist abroad. After receiving a coveted invitation to appear on Podcast and Chill with MacG, the “Afro-Rave” pioneer revealed that she currently cannot afford the steep cost of a flight back to South Africa.

The High Cost of Coming Home

Taking to X, the Pump It On hitmaker was candid about her financial constraints, citing global economic shifts and the rising cost of aviation fuel (kerosene) as major barriers.

“I’m invited to podcast & chill manje inking is that I’m overseas and Kerosene is so expensive because of the war… can you guys xhasa the bhanoyi [support the flight],” she wrote.

Delazy emphasized that while a virtual interview via Zoom or Skype is an option, it wouldn’t capture the raw energy and impact of an in-studio session. She appealed to her fanbase and the “Chillipedes” to help facilitate her return for the sit-down.

From “Biggest” to “Most Misunderstood”

The travel appeal came alongside a vulnerable reflection on her career trajectory. Delazy, who dominated the African charts in the early 2010s, addressed her perceived sidelining within the industry.

  • The Shift: “I was once the biggest artist in Africa, now I’m the most misunderstood artist in Africa,” she claimed, touching on the friction she has faced while evolving her sound.
  • Independence: She revealed that she is entirely self-funding her career from the UK, including her upcoming EP scheduled for release on May 20.

Mixed Reactions Online

The request has divided social media. While many loyal fans have started tagging brands and the podcast team to assist with a plane ticket, others have questioned how a high-profile artist could find herself in this position. Regardless of the debate, the moment has highlighted the precarious nature of independent music production and the genuine desire Delazy has to reconnect with her South African roots.
