Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen speaks out ahead of the Mamelodi Sundowns clash.

As Kaizer Chiefs prepare to travel to Pretoria for a titanic midweek clash against Mamelodi Sundowns, club captain Brandon Petersen has made it clear: Amakhosi are playing for their own future, not to decide the fate of their rivals.

While a victory or draw for Chiefs at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday would deal a massive blow to Sundowns’ title defense and potentially hand the advantage to Orlando Pirates, Petersen insists the “Kingmakers” narrative hasn’t entered the Naturena dressing room.

The Objective: Africa or Bust

For Petersen and his teammates, the mission is grounded in securing a top-three finish and a return to continental competition via the CAF Confederation Cup.

  • Focus on the Table: “The most important thing is that we’ve told ourselves we want to finish as high as possible. Obviously, we want to secure continental football for next season,” Petersen stated via GOAL.
  • Internal Progress: The veteran goalkeeper noted that the team has enjoyed a significantly more consistent run in the league compared to previous seasons and wants to maintain that momentum in the final four fixtures.
  • Dismissing the Hype: Petersen was blunt regarding the title race influence: “It’s not about deciding who wins the league. It’s about finishing the season strongly.”

The Wall of Naturena

Petersen’s form will be the deciding factor on Wednesday night. The 31-year-old shot-stopper was the hero of the Soweto Derby last month, where his heroics single-handedly denied Orlando Pirates a victory.

Ironically, those same Pirates supporters will now be the ones most vocally backing Petersen, hoping he can replicate that “Man of the Match” performance against the relentless Mamelodi Sundowns attack.
