The Sharks have dropped a massive statement of intent, locking down rising Springbok sensation Ethan Hooker on a long-term contract extension that keeps him in Durban until 2029.
Despite already being committed until 2027, the 23-year-old’s spectacular form over the last 18 months forced the Sharks’ hand to secure their cornerstone talent early. Under coach JP Pietersen, Hooker is officially the future of the franchise.
From Rising Star to Springbok Star
Hooker’s rise through the ranks has been clinical. After tearing it up at franchise level, he earned his green and gold stripes (Springbok #948) against Italy in July 2025. He truly announced himself to the world during the Rugby Championship, putting on an absolute masterclass on the right wing during South Africa’s emphatic 43-10 demolition of the All Blacks in Wellington.
At 1.94m and 98kg, his versatility across the midfield and the wing—combined with bone-crunching defense and lethal attacking instincts—makes him one of the most exciting backs in the country.
Injury Setback & The Road to Recovery
It hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing. Hooker’s explosive momentum was temporarily halted in April after he suffered a dislocated shoulder while dotting down against the Ospreys in the URC.
Following surgery in Durban, he is officially ruled out of the upcoming Nations Championship Tests against England, Scotland, and Wales. However, the target is locked: medical staff are optimistic he’ll be back in time for the blockbuster Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series against the All Blacks this coming August and September.
