The “Sea Robbers” have spoken, and it’s a massive blow for Stellenbosch FC. Orlando Pirates have officially confirmed that on-loan striker Tshegofatso Mabasa will be ineligible to take the field when the two sides meet in a high-stakes Betway Premiership encounter this Wednesday.
Mabasa, who moved to the Cape Winelands on loan in January, has been in lethal form, netting four goals in just nine appearances. His absence leaves a significant void in the “Maroons” attack as they prepare to host a title-chasing Buccaneers side at Athlone Stadium.
The “Parent Club” Clause
Speculation had been rife regarding a “gentleman’s agreement” or a formal clause in Mabasa’s loan contract. Pirates cleared the air on Monday, citing that the 29-year-old forward is officially unavailable for selection against his parent club.
- A Shift in Policy: Interestingly, this marks a change from previous years. In 2024, while on loan at Sekhukhune United, Mabasa was permitted to play against the Buccaneers. This time, however, the Soweto giants are taking no chances as the title race reaches its boiling point.
- Stellies’ Missing Pieces: The absence of Mabasa is compounded by the suspension of key defender Thabo Moloisane, who is serving a one-match ban for an accumulation of yellow cards.
High Stakes at Athlone Stadium
While Stellenbosch will feel the pinch of missing their leading men, they remain a formidable force at home. The Cape side hasn’t tasted defeat in their own backyard since December, recording three wins and two draws in their last five home fixtures.
For Orlando Pirates, the mission is purely about survival. Anything less than a victory could mathematically end their quest to catch Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of the log. With only three matches remaining after Wednesday, the Buccaneers are under immense pressure to secure all three points.
