The South African cricket world is in mourning following the death of Pieter Mulder, father of Proteas star Wiaan Mulder.

The South African cricketing fraternity has come together to support Proteas all-rounder Wiaan Mulder following the heartbreaking news of the passing of his father, Pieter Mulder.

The Lions Cricket Union and the DP World Lions issued an official statement expressing their deepest sympathies to Wiaan and the Mulder family. Pieter was a beloved figure within the Lions community, recognized not just as a parent, but as a devoted and passionate supporter who rarely missed a match where his son was featuring.

A Pillar of Support

The Lions Cricket Union emphasized the profound bond between Pieter and the team, noting that his loyalty to the “Pride of Jo’burg” was unmatched.

“During this profoundly difficult time, our thoughts are with Wiaan, his loved ones, and all who were touched by his father’s life,” the Union stated. “Pieter was a proud father and supported Wiaan so much; he loved the Lions and proudly supported every match.”

The cricketing community has rallied around the 28-year-old star, offering a wave of sympathy as he navigates this personal tragedy.

A Record-Breaking Legacy

Wiaan Mulder has become a household name in South African cricket, particularly after his historic exploits over the last year. Since making his Test debut in 2019, Mulder has evolved into a cornerstone of the national side.

  • The Bulawayo Epic: In July 2025, Mulder etched his name into the history books by scoring a monumental 367 not out against Zimbabwe.
  • National Record: This remains the highest individual Test score by a South African and the fifth-highest in the history of the game globally.
  • Leadership: Captaining the side during that match, Mulder made the selfless—and much-debated—decision to declare the innings just 33 runs short of Brian Lara’s world record of 400*, prioritizing the team’s chance at victory over personal glory.

While Mulder has faced a dip in form in the six innings following that record-breaking feat, his stature as a leader and a world-class talent remains undisputed.

Standing Together

The Lions Cricket Union reiterated that they stand by Wiaan not just as an elite athlete, but as a cherished member of their family. As the Proteas prepare for upcoming fixtures, the focus remains on providing Mulder with the time and space needed to honor his father’s memory.
