The 2026 Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K, originally scheduled for Sunday, May 10, has been officially cancelled. The decision follows urgent consultations between event organizers, the City of Cape Town, and local safety officials due to a series of dangerous cold fronts expected to hit the Western Cape this weekend.
With the safety of thousands of runners and staff at stake, organizers determined that a safe race experience could not be guaranteed under the predicted conditions.
Severe Weather Forecast: What to Expect
Meteorological reports indicate a significant weather system moving across the region:
- Dual Cold Fronts: The first front is expected to make landfall Sunday morning, with a second following closely on Monday.
- Extreme Conditions: The forecast includes gale-force coastal winds, disruptive rainfall, and freezing temperatures.
- Potential Impact: Local authorities have warned of road flooding, risks to informal settlements, and extremely hazardous driving conditions across the Cape Town interior.
“Under the expected conditions, we could not guarantee a safe and enjoyable race experience for all involved,” stated Dezroy Poole, Race Director for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series.
Goodwill Gestures for Participants
Recognizing the disappointment and the current economic climate, organizers and sponsors have introduced a comprehensive “goodwill” package for registered runners:
- Refund or Rollover: Participants can choose between a full refund of their entry fee or free entry to the 2027 Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K.
- Race Pack Collection: Despite the cancellation, runners can still head to the Grand Parade to collect their official race packs and exclusive event merchandise.
