She's unstoppable! South African super fan Mama Joy Chauke defies the government funding ban and touches down in Mexico City to support Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

South Africa’s most famous soccer super fan, Joyce “Mama Joy” Chauke, has officially touched down in Mexico City. Clad in her trademark traditional attire and iconic hand-painted makarapa, the indomitable supporter has arrived ahead of Bafana Bafana’s monumental 2026 FIFA World Cup opening clash against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.

Her arrival marks a major personal victory. Following a highly publicized funding standoff with the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture (DSAC), Mama Joy had to bypass state machinery entirely to ensure she wouldn’t be watching the tournament from her couch.

The State Funding Block: Gayton McKenzie Holds the Line

Mama Joy’s international travels have long split public opinion across South Africa. While many view her as an indispensable cultural ambassador, critics have frequently questioned the financial cost of sending “super fans” abroad on the taxpayers’ dime.

When the Government of National Unity took shape, Sport, Arts, and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie immediately ended government-sponsored trips for superfans, redirecting those millions toward struggling grassroots athletes and township developmental initiatives.

“Why should I lie using diplomatic language? Our policy is not under review,” McKenzie reiterated regarding the funding cuts. “We are not going to pay for super fans as a department. It’s unfair because South Africa is full of super fans.”

Sights Set on All Three Group Stages

Despite the door being shut by the DSAC, Mama Joy launched public appeals, turned to social media crowd-funding, and utilized her personal resources to secure her flights to North America.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday and Wednesday, she documented her long journey and successful arrival in the Mexican capital. Speaking to KickOff Magazine, she confirmed she will be in the stands to act as Bafana’s “12th player” for all three group stage matches:

  1. vs Mexico — 11 June at Estadio Azteca (Mexico City)
  2. vs Czech Republic — 18 June at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Atlanta)
  3. vs South Korea — 25 June at Estadio BBVA (Monterrey)

While social media commentators have heavily debated the calculated luxury expenses of a World Cup trip—with viral breakdowns estimating flights, premium stadium tickets, and accommodation hitting over R343,000—Mama Joy remains entirely unfazed, stating she has “healed, moved on from the drama,” and is ready to rally the troops
