The recent transfer of 20-year-old South African defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi from Orlando Pirates to Chicago Fire of the Major League Soccer (MLS) has sparked debate, with contrasting opinions on whether the move came too soon.

Mbokazi, known as “TLB,” completed the move after less than a year with the Buccaneers, during which he helped secure two trophies and played a key role in Bafana Bafana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Contrasting Views on the Transfer

The decision to join the American side was questioned by some, including Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, who publicly suggested the young defender should have finished the current season before moving overseas.

However, former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye has strongly tipped Mbokazi for success, viewing the US league as an underrated opportunity. Khanye stated on iDiski TV that Mbokazi’s difficult “background is going to push him to last longer, even as an international.”

Financial and Exposure Gains

Khanye emphasized that the move is a significant step forward, particularly in terms of financial reward and exposure:

“This move is more of a stepping stone for him. I don’t know why we underestimate the American league, I really don’t know why… This is a decent move and look at the money they signed him for. He is now going to be exposed and the money tells you there is something the team has seen.”

Mbokazi played his final match for Orlando Pirates earlier this month, securing the Carling Knockout Cup. He is set to join Chicago Fire immediately following the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
