Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz has explained the MTN8 defeat to Golden Arrows, defended Brandon Petersen and revealed why new signings aren't starting yet.

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has addressed the club’s disappointing MTN8 exit, insisting that goalkeeper Brandon Petersen should not be singled out for blame after the 1-0 defeat to Golden Arrows.

Amakhosi were knocked out in the quarter-finals on Sunday after struggling to turn their chances into goals. Despite the result, Da Cruz believes his team showed enough quality but lacked the cutting edge needed to change the outcome.

Chiefs Paid the Price for Missed Chances

Da Cruz admitted that Chiefs created opportunities but failed to make them count.

The decisive moment arrived shortly after half-time when Golden Arrows capitalised on a mistake involving Petersen, who struggled to deal with a cross.

Rather than point the finger at his goalkeeper, however, Da Cruz stressed that the result was a collective responsibility.

The Chiefs coach indicated that he would analyse the goal again when reviewing the match, but rejected the idea that one individual was responsible for the defeat.

For Da Cruz, the bigger problem was the team’s lack of efficiency in front of goal.

Da Cruz Defends Petersen

Petersen’s error inevitably attracted attention, but Da Cruz was reluctant to make the goalkeeper the scapegoat.

The coach’s message was clear: when a team loses, everyone shares the responsibility.

That approach could prove important as Chiefs attempt to put the MTN8 disappointment behind them and focus on the Betway Premiership campaign.

Why Didn’t Chiefs Start Their New Signings?

Another talking point was the absence of several new recruits from the starting XI.

Da Cruz explained that the new players are being introduced gradually, rather than being thrown immediately into the starting lineup.

One player specifically mentioned was former Stellenbosch winger Langelihle Phili.

According to Da Cruz, Phili still needs to improve his physical condition and adapt to the tactical demands of Chiefs’ playing style before he is ready for a starting role.

The coach appears determined to give the newcomers time to settle into the squad.

Chiefs Fans Will Have to Wait

With the MTN8 campaign already over, Chiefs’ attention now turns fully to the Betway Premiership.

The club started its league campaign with a 3-1 victory over Kruger United, but expectations remain high after the early cup disappointment.

Da Cruz now faces the challenge of integrating his new signings, improving Chiefs’ attacking efficiency and ensuring the team doesn’t allow another avoidable setback to derail its season.

Can Da Cruz turn things around at Naturena?
