The University of the Western Cape (UWC) has reached a prestigious international milestone as Master of Social Work student Zoe Bok has been officially named a 2026 DREAM Scholar.

Selected by Achieving the Dream (ATD)—a leading U.S.-based organization focused on economic mobility and student success—Bok is one of only eight students globally to receive this honor. Her selection marks a significant bridge between the South African and American higher education landscapes.

The Journey to Portland: Leadership on a Global Stage

In March 2026, Bok will travel to Portland, Oregon, to participate in the immersive DREAM 2026 annual conference. This isn’t just an award; it is a high-level leadership summit where Bok will:

  • Represent South Africa: Engage with global academic leaders to discuss the role of community colleges and universities in fostering social equity.
  • Present Her Story: Deliver an individual presentation detailing her personal journey and her insights into how UWC facilitates student completion and opportunity.
  • Network with Visionaries: Join UWC’s Prof. Ralarala and Prof. Su Pather (sponsored by the ATD and Kresge Foundation) to attend sessions focused on the future of global education.

The Rhythm of Resilience: Who is Zoe Bok?

Bok’s path to academic excellence is as diverse as her upbringing. Having lived in five different South African provinces, she describes her life as a “dance”—a metaphor for the rhythm, movement, and resilience she has cultivated along the way.

  • The Healer: Her Master’s research focuses on Child-Centred Play Therapy, a field that merges her creative spirit with a deep commitment to early childhood emotional development.
  • The Mentor: Beyond her studies, she serves as a First-Year Transition Officer, guiding new undergraduate students through the daunting shift into university life.
  • The Advocate: Her work is rooted in “quiet but steady” kindness, emphasizing the power of human connection in the healing process.

“Zoe’s dedication to promoting a sense of connectedness and belonging among first-year students exemplifies the core values of UWC.” — Prof. Su Pather, UWC First Year Experience Coordinator.

Reframing the Future of Higher Education

The DREAM Scholars programme isn’t just about celebrating individual achievement; it’s about systemic change. According to ATD President and CEO Dr. Karen A. Stout, students like Bok are “co-designers” of the educational systems of the future. By centering student voices, institutions can better serve as engines for community prosperity.
