The “Water” hitmaker is officially unstoppable. Grammy-winning South African sensation Tyla has solidified her status as a global powerhouse by clinching the Outstanding International Song trophy at the 2026 NAACP Image Awards.

The win, announced on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, marks a historic milestone for the 24-year-old, as she triumphed over a star-studded field dominated by Afrobeats royalty.

Victory in a “Category of Giants”

Tyla’s first-ever NAACP Image Award was earned for her 2025 smash hit, “Is It” (Epic Records). The victory is particularly significant given the heavyweights she was up against. In a repeat of recent international award cycles, Tyla once again edged out Nigerian icons Davido and Burna Boy on American soil.

The award was part of the non-televised honors leading up to the 57th NAACP Image Awards gala at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California.

The “NAACP” Identity Debate Ignites Again

While the win is a cause for celebration in South Africa, it has reignited the complex conversation surrounding Tyla’s identity and the American categorization of “Colored” vs. “Coloured.”

Shortly after the announcement, social media erupted when a fan page on X (formerly Twitter) posted a cheeky reminder: “Y’all would NEVER believe what the ‘C’ in ‘NAACP’ stands for.”

  • The Irony: Supporters pointed out the irony of past critics who questioned Tyla’s fit within Black music spaces, only for her to be honored by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
  • The Nuance: Cultural critics were quick to counter, noting that the “C” in NAACP is a historical artifact from 1909 America, which carries a vastly different socio-political weight than the “Coloured” identity in South Africa.

Despite the discourse, the message from the industry is clear: Tyla’s music transcends borders and definitions.
