The University of South Africa (Unisa) recently launched its “Menu of Services” awareness campaign at the Florida Science Campus, bringing critical institutional resources directly to the student body. Despite inclement weather, over one hundred students gathered to engage with regional leadership and service departments in an initiative designed to bridge the gap between registration and academic success.

Hosted by Unisa’s Gauteng Region, the event served as a comprehensive “roadmap” for new and returning students, ensuring they are equipped with the tools needed to navigate the complexities of distance learning.

Safety, Funding, and Academic Integrity

The program featured a heavy-hitting lineup of university officials, each addressing a specific pillar of the student experience:

  • Campus Safety: Omar Abdullah (Manager: Protection Services) delivered a vital briefing, warning students to verify the identity of individuals on campus and stay vigilant against criminal activity.
  • Financial Aid: Maupi Penyenye provided updates on NSFAS funding opportunities and administrative processes.
  • Curriculum Management: Cristine Tuge (CEMS & CAS) emphasized the importance of module selection, urging students to stick to prescribed curriculum guidelines to avoid graduation delays.

Digital Literacy and Assessment Success

As Africa’s leading ODeL (Open Distance and e-Learning) institution, digital tools took center stage. Digital Learning Advisor Maatlou Matsetse encouraged students to master Unisa’s online platforms, while the assessment team—Martha Nyandeni and Nervani Govender—clarified the rigorous expectations for assignments and examinations.

Holistic Support: Beyond the Books

The campaign highlighted that success at Unisa requires more than just academic effort:

  • Academic Literacy: Experts spoke on the necessity of strong research and writing skills.
  • Mental Health: Student Counsellor Kagiso Mekoa introduced psychosocial support services available to help students manage academic pressure and personal well-being.
  • Practical Experience: Discussions on Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) and micro-teaching lessons provided a glimpse into how students can gain real-world workplace experience before they graduate.

The Student Voice: Siyathokoza Otto Nkwanyana, Regional SRC Chairperson, congratulated the students but issued a stern warning: handle grievances through official university channels rather than social media to avoid potential legal and reputational damage.
