n a deeply personal interview on 947 with Anele Mdoda, author and public speaker Rachel Kolisi provided a masterclass in emotional intelligence. Speaking openly about her life since her October 2024 separation from Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, Rachel addressed the complexities of co-parenting and the hard-won lessons of her past.
The “Stepmother” Question
When asked the sensitive question of how she would handle the eventual introduction of a new maternal figure into her children’s lives, Rachel’s response was immediate and focused:
“I can only parent the best that I can and that is my priority. Everything else? None of my business.” — Rachel Kolisi
Her “eyes on the prize” approach signals a commitment to providing a stable environment for Nicholas and Keziah, as well as Liyema and Liphelo, the siblings Siya and Rachel famously adopted and raised together.
The Reality of Sacrifice
Rachel didn’t shy away from the darker side of her early marriage. She described the period shortly after the birth of her first child—when they also welcomed Siya’s siblings into their home—as “horrific.” She reflected on the “loss of self” that came with stepping away from her career, revealing the vulnerability of losing her financial independence and having to rely on her spouse for basic needs. This chapter of her life now serves as a foundation for her current drive toward autonomy and resilience.
Rebuilding with Purpose
Nearly 18 months after the split that shocked the nation, Rachel appears to be standing in her own light. By refusing to engage in hypotheticals about Siya’s future relationships, she is prioritizing her mental health and the well-being of the four children who remain at the center of her world.
