The Free State rugby community is in shock following the devastating passing of Nhlakanipho ‘Nipho’ Buthelezi, a talented young scrumhalf who collapsed during a high-profile schoolboy match on Friday.
The 15-year-old Grade 9 learner from HTS Sasolburg was competing in an Under-15 match against rivals Sasolburg High School as part of the prestigious FNB Classic Clash—a fixture with a storied 47-year history at the DP de Villiers Stadium.
A Young Life Cut Short
According to reports from the Free State Department of Education, the tragedy unfolded when Buthelezi began experiencing severe breathing difficulties mid-match.
Emergency medical teams acted swiftly, transporting him to Sasolburg Hospital. Heartbreakingly, the young athlete was pronounced dead upon arrival.
“We are deeply shocked by the tragic loss of Nhlakanipho Buthelezi, a young life cut short,” stated Free State education spokesperson Howard Ndaba. “Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and the HTS Sasolburg community.”

Tributes to a “Giant of the Game”
The news has sparked an outpouring of grief across social media. HTS Sasolburg confirmed the loss in a somber announcement, extending support to the Buthelezi family and the wider student body.
His coach, Thorne Swart, shared a moving tribute alongside a highlights reel of the young scrumhalf’s best moments on the field.
- The Heart of a Lion: Swart noted that while Nipho wasn’t the biggest player on the field, his impact was massive. “We lost a giant of our game. We lost a brother,” he wrote.
- Academic & Athletic Excellence: The coach praised Buthelezi’s relentless determination to succeed both in the classroom and on the rugby pitch.
- Playing On: The team has pledged to dedicate the remainder of the 2026 season to Nipho’s memory.
