UCT’s Fanelesibonge Mbuyazi is a finalist in the Huawei Code4Mzansi Challenge for e-Khadi—a revolutionary platform offering fair credit to SASSA recipients via community trust.

The story of e-Khadi began with a simple but powerful mission: to provide a dignified alternative to the predatory loan sharks that often haunt underserved communities. Now, the innovative project has earned its founder, Fanelesibonge Mbuyazi, a coveted spot as a Top 10 finalist in the Huawei Code4Mzansi Challenge 2026.

Mbuyazi, a UCT-trained software engineer originally from KwaZulu-Natal, has spent her career at the intersection of fintech and social impact. With e-Khadi, she is leveraging technology to restore dignity to South Africa’s most vulnerable financial participants.

A Digital Lifeline for SASSA Recipients

Over 18 million South Africans rely on SASSA grants, but for many, these funds are depleted within weeks. When emergencies arise—like the need for bread, milk, or electricity—families are often forced into the arms of “mashonisas” (loan sharks), leading to a crushing cycle of debt.

e-Khadi provides a fair, community-driven alternative:

  • Trust-Based Credit: Instead of requiring formal payslips or complex credit scores, the platform utilizes “community trust” and existing stokvel networks to verify borrowers.
  • Spaza Shop Integration: Recipients can access small, digital store credit directly at local spaza shops for essentials.
  • Seamless Repayment: Loans are settled fairly through monthly grant cycles, ensuring transparency and safety.

“Community is not an add-on to my work; it is the foundation of it. We are building technology that restores dignity and creates opportunity.” — Fanelesibonge Mbuyazi

Innovation for Social Good

The project aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9, focusing on building inclusive infrastructure through innovation. By strengthening existing community systems rather than replacing them, Mbuyazi has created a financial ecosystem that finally includes those historically left behind.

Mbuyazi credits her time at the University of Cape Town (UCT) for shaping her holistic approach to problem-solving—viewing technology not just as code, but as a bridge between people and processes.

The Road Ahead: Scaling for Impact

With the Huawei Code4Mzansi People’s Choice Award voting closing on 10 May, the momentum behind e-Khadi is growing. Mbuyazi envisions a future where the platform integrates even more deeply with local businesses across the country, evolving into a comprehensive financial inclusion hub.

For Mbuyazi, this isn’t just about building an app; it’s about breaking a cycle and proving that technology can directly improve the daily reality of millions.
