Springbok captain Siya Kolisi prepares for his final matches with the Sharks before returning to the Stormers.

The final whistle is approaching for Siya Kolisi’s tenure in Durban. With only two matches remaining in the United Rugby Championship (URC) season, the Springbok captain is preparing for an emotional exit from the Hollywoodbets Sharks as he readies himself for a high-profile return to the DHL Stormers.

While the season has been marked by collective frustration on the pitch, Kolisi’s departure signifies the end of a significant chapter for both the player and the KwaZulu-Natal franchise.

Accountability in a Challenging Season

The Sharks’ failure to secure a spot in the URC playoffs remains a sore point for the squad. Despite boasting a star-studded roster, the Durban-based side has struggled for consistency, a fact Kolisi addressed with characteristic transparency.

“We are deeply disappointed to have missed out on the top eight,” Kolisi admitted. “Given the caliber of the group we have, we certainly should have qualified; there are no excuses for falling short. It is painful because the fans have been so incredibly supportive, and we feel we haven’t delivered the results this club deserves.”

The captain emphasized the importance of finishing the season with pride, starting with a formidable challenge against Benetton this weekend, to leave a positive foundation for the remaining squad members.

A “Full Circle” Moment: The Move to Cape Town

Kolisi’s professional journey is set to come full circle. Having started his senior career in the Mother City, he will return to the Stormers to add to his 118 caps for the franchise. The move is driven largely by a desire to be closer to his family, who are based in Cape Town.

Why the move matters:

  • Family First: The transition allows Kolisi to balance the demands of elite rugby with his role as a father and husband.
  • Returning to Roots: Kolisi has frequently cited the formative role the Stormers and the Cape Town faithful played in his development as both a player and a leader.
  • Veteran Presence: His return provides the Stormers with unparalleled experience and leadership as they look to maintain their status as a powerhouse in the URC.

Gratitude to the “Shark Tank”

Despite the disappointing results on the scoreboard, Kolisi spoke warmly of the culture and community in KwaZulu-Natal. Having recently reached his 50th appearance for the Sharks, he credited the city and the fans for welcoming his family with open arms.

“I am immensely grateful to the Sharks for everything they have done for me—not just in my career, but in supporting my family,” he noted. “My children love it here… we will return as often as we can and will always support the boys from afar.”
