14-cap Springbok loose forward Jean-Luc du Preez has reportedly been forced into early rugby retirement at age 30 due to ongoing concussion issues.

In a deeply saddening development for South African rugby, physical loose forward Jean-Luc du Preez has reportedly been forced to hang up his boots at just 30 years old.

According to respected French rugby publication Midi Olympique, the versatile Springbok has made the agonizing decision to retire from professional rugby following persistent, career-threatening concussion-related issues.

“If it were my son, I would ask him to stop because I’m very scared.” — Laurent Marti, Bordeaux Bègles President

Concussion Struggles Halt a Powerful Career

The abrasive back-rower has not laced up his boots since January 2026 after suffering a severe head knock. It was the latest in a long, highly concerning history of concussions that has ultimately given the former Sharks star no choice but to prioritize his long-term health over his rugby career.

Before his recent move to French Top 14 outfit Bordeaux Bègles, where he managed only three appearances, Du Preez was a powerhouse fixture in club rugby:

  • The Sharks (Durban): Where he burst onto the scene as a schoolboy prodigy alongside his twin brother Dan and older brother Robert.
  • Sale Sharks (England): Where he spent years asserting himself as one of the most dominant physical forces in the Gallagher Premiership.

An International Legacy Cut Cruelly Short

Though blessed with world-class carrying power, abrasive tackling, and immense tactical utility across the scrum, injuries routinely scuppered Du Preez’s ambitions at the absolute worst times.

He ends his international career with 14 Test caps for the Springboks. His final appearance in the green and gold came against Argentina in August 2023. A mixture of illness and a severe knee injury subsequently derailed his chances of securing a permanent squad spot, before head injuries ultimately ended his playing days completely.

The entire South African and global rugby community rallies behind the Du Preez family as Jean-Luc navigates life after the whistle.
