Former Grey College and FNB Wits rugby player Liam Santos has received a three-year doping suspension from SAIDS for anabolic steroids.

The South African university rugby landscape has been hit by a massive doping scandal. Former Grey College and FNB Wits loose forward Liam Santos has been slapped with a three-year suspension from all competitive sporting activities after testing positive for banned anabolic steroids.

The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) confirmed the heavy sanction following an in-competition urine test conducted during the 2026 Varsity Shield tournament.

From Hat-Trick Hero to Banished: The Timeline

The drug test took place on 20 February 2026, right after a high-stakes Varsity Shield fixture against FNB UFH (University of Fort Hare). In a cruel twist of irony, Santos had just put on a masterclass performance on the pitch, scoring a brilliant hat-trick of tries for Wits before being pulled into the testing room.

The Prohibited Cocktails

According to the official SAIDS documentation, Santos’ sample flagged the presence of two separate prohibited substances:

  • Drostanolone Metabolite
  • Dehydrochloromethyl Testosterone Metabolite

Under the 2026 World Anti-Doping Code (WADC) Prohibited List, both of these compounds fall squarely under Category S1 (Anabolic Androgenic Steroids). These are strictly classified as “banned at all times”—meaning their presence in an athlete’s system is a severe violation regardless of whether it is in-competition or out-of-competition.

Sentence Reduced Due to Early Plea

The young forward initially faced a standard, mandatory four-year ban from the game. However, Santos opted for an early admission of guilt under Article 10.8.1 of the SAIDS Rules.

By accepting accountability immediately rather than fighting the charges through an extensive tribunal process, his penalty was reduced by 12 months.

The Ban Layout: Santos’ official period of ineligibility is backdated to 24 April 2026 (the date his provisional suspension was first enacted) and will run through until 23 April 2029.

SAIDS Cracks Down on Grassroots Rugby

This case marks yet another chapter in SAIDS’ aggressive, ongoing campaign to weed out performance-enhancing drugs from schoolboy and university-level South African rugby. For Santos—who rose through the ranks at the prestigious Grey College in Bloemfontein before moving to Wits University—the ruling serves as an absolute roadblock to what was a highly promising rugby trajectory.
