DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA — In a brilliant stroke of contractual engineering, the Hollywoodbets Sharks have successfully tied down superstar Springbok fullback Aphelele Fassi to a long-term contract extension. However, it comes with a major catch for the Durban-based franchise.
The Sharks officially confirmed on Friday that as part of his renewed commitment to Kings Park, the 28-year-old maestro has been granted a lucrative, season-long sabbatical in the Japan Rugby League One for the 2026/27 campaign. Fassi will jet off to Asia immediately following the conclusion of his upcoming international commitments with Rassie Erasmus’ Springboks.
Experience Over Exit: The Sharks Play the Long Game
While the identity of the Japanese club remains under wraps, the Sharks are framing the departure as a win-win for Fassi’s personal and professional development. Crucially, unlike previous short-term departures that eventually turned into permanent overseas exits, Fassi is legally locked in to return to Durban in July 2027 ahead of the 2027/28 United Rugby Championship (URC) season.
“This opportunity will allow him to experience a new rugby environment, embrace a different culture, and continue growing both on and off the field,” the Sharks announced in an official social media statement. “We look forward to welcoming him back home in July 2027.”
The Fullback Dilemma: A Rising Trend Behind the Scenes
Fassi’s temporary departure follows an increasingly common, high-value trend where South Africa’s elite Test players capitalize on massive Japanese salaries during the URC window before returning home. He joins an elite club of local talent—including Sharks teammate Grant Williams and Bulls stars Kurt-Lee Arendse and Ruan Nortjé—opting for short-term Asian stints.
However, the move leaves the Sharks severely exposed at the back. Fassi, who has scored 7 tries across his 15 Test caps for South Africa, missed a massive chunk of the domestic season due to a severe shoulder injury that required intensive surgery. His upcoming departure leaves a massive void at number 15, forcing the franchise to lean heavily on highly rated Junior Bok prodigies like Zekhethelo Siyaya and Luan Giliomee to step into the pressure cooker of European rugby.
