Orlando Pirates will look to continue their positive start to the Betway Premiership title defence when they travel to Durban to face AmaZulu on Wednesday night.
The Buccaneers head into their first midweek league fixture of the campaign full of confidence after opening the season with a 2-0 win over Milford FC and then edging Durban City in a dramatic MTN8 quarter-final.
The match at Moses Mabhida Stadium kicks off at 19:30.
Pirates chasing another three points
Orlando Pirates began their league title defence in impressive fashion and will now look to build on that result against a determined AmaZulu side.
A victory could send the Buccaneers to the top of the Betway Premiership standings, although coach Abdeslam Ouaddou knows his squad faces a demanding period of fixtures.
Pirates have also strengthened their squad during the transfer window, giving Ouaddou more options as the schedule begins to intensify.
New Norwegian striker Sebastian Pedersen is among the new arrivals and could be in line for his first appearance for the club.
AmaZulu is looking to bounce back
AmaZulu enter the encounter with plenty to prove after suffering a dramatic 4-3 extra-time defeat to Sekhukhune United in the MTN8 quarter-finals.
The result ended Usuthu’s cup campaign, with Vuyo Letlapa scoring the decisive goal in extra time.
Coach Arthur Zwane will now want his team to respond immediately by producing another strong league performance on home soil.
AmaZulu also opened their league campaign with a victory and will be determined to make home advantage count against the reigning champions.
Pirates dominate recent league meetings
Recent history strongly favours Orlando Pirates.
The Buccaneers completed a league double over AmaZulu last season, winning 2-0 in Durban before a convincing 3-0 victory at Orlando Amstel Arena.
Those results extended Pirates’ unbeaten league run against Usuthu to 21 matches.
Pirates have won 11 of those meetings, while the other 10 ended in draws. AmaZulu’s last league victory over the Buccaneers came in October 2009.
That makes Wednesday’s fixture another major test for Zwane’s side.
