Former Kaizer Chiefs striking icon Pollen Ndlanya has sent a fiery wake-up call to the Amakhosi squad, warning them to brace themselves for the uncompromising and intense style of incoming French coach Fernando Da Cruz.
With pre-season training kicking off this week before the Glamour Boys jet off to Europe, Ndlanya expects a massive culture shock for players who aren’t ready to give their absolute all.
The “Arrogant” French Mentality Explained
Speaking to iDiski Times, Ndlanya compared Da Cruz’s impending arrival to his own playing days under legendary French tactician Philippe Troussier. He noted that the direct, demanding nature of French coaches can often be misunderstood by South African players.
“Look, French coaches can be arrogant, and sometimes because of that we tend to think they are racist,” Ndlanya remarked bluntly. “But no, they are just driven; they always want you to give 120%. You have to put in the effort as a player.”
Recalling his time under Troussier, Ndlanya added: “You could never hide yourself from Philippe Troussier. He was a very disciplined coach who wanted to win at all costs.”
‘Don’t Take It Personally’
Ndlanya’s primary advice to the current crop of Chiefs stars is simple: develop thick skin, master the tactical training methods, and do not take the coach’s intense discipline to heart.
“After training and after the game, you’d be surprised and think, ‘is this the same man who was swearing at me?’ because he will treat you like a good friend. My advice to the players would be to not take it personally but understand that the man just wants to excel. He will push you to it, even if it means him using some unprintable words.”
With only defender Thabo Moloisane secured in the transfer window so far, Da Cruz’s task of reshaping the squad’s mentality begins the moment he steps onto the training pitch this Wednesday.
