From the small Eastern Cape town of Somerset East to the international test arena, Jaco Williams has officially announced himself on the global stage.
The 20-year-old rising star enjoyed a dream debut for the Springboks over the weekend, putting on a composed, high-impact performance that featured both a try and an assist. Williams was one of four new caps handed an opportunity by head coach Rassie Erasmus, continuing his meteoric rise following a stellar campaign with the Junior Springboks and the Sharks.
“That’s How a Town Supports Its Player”
Back in Somerset East, the local community gathered in large numbers to watch and celebrate their hometown hero in grand style.
Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus took to social media to share a moving video of the local celebrations, praising the community’s passionate support:

The Next Mapimpi? Stick Praises Williams’ Journey
Speaking prior to the Test match, Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick drew inspiring parallels between Williams’ path to the green and gold and that of two-time Rugby World Cup winner Makazole Mapimpi:
“Jaco Williams from Somerset East… I had to Google the last Springbok from that region; I think it was 1955. You look at Makazole Mapimpi’s story—I think Jaco Williams’ storyline and where he comes from, you wouldn’t think that a Springbok comes from that region.
For him to be where he is now, as a young kid at 20 years old getting an opportunity to play, it’s a very, very special story. We always talk about the story of Mapimpi; I think Jaco Williams’ story is one for the future. Good kid, I enjoy working with him.”
