Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus has confirmed a tactical split-squad strategy ahead of South Africa’s upcoming one-off Test against Argentina in Buenos Aires on 8 August 2026.
To manage player workload and maximize preparation for the historic four-Test series against the All Blacks, the world champions will travel to South America with a streamlined 26-man squad, while 15 to 16 key players remain behind in South Africa alongside select assistant coaches.
The Split-Squad Breakdown & All Blacks Schedule
The decision forms part of a calculated, long-term plan to ensure first-choice players are fresh for “Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry” while simultaneously testing depth against Los Pumas.
“A separate group of 15 to 16 players will remain in South Africa to begin preparations for the series against the All Blacks, scheduled to kick off on 22 August. A few coaches will stay with them,” Erasmus confirmed via SA Rugby.
Upcoming Springbok Schedule:
- 8 August: vs Argentina (Buenos Aires)
- 22 August: vs All Blacks (Ellis Park, Johannesburg)
- 29 August: vs All Blacks (Cape Town Stadium)
- 5 September: vs All Blacks (FNB Stadium, Johannesburg)
- 12 September: vs All Blacks (Baltimore, United States)
Playmaker Boost: Sacha Returns, Pollard Sidelined
While veteran flyhalf Handré Pollard is recovering from a pulled hamstring, the Springboks received a major boost with the return of star playmaker Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who is confirmed to travel with the 26-man squad to Argentina to build match fitness before facing New Zealand.
The two-week break prior to the Buenos Aires clash gives the squad ample time to clear up minor niggles and fine-tune tactical systems before launching their blockbuster four-Test tour against the Kiwis.
