In a groundbreaking celebration of the medium, campus community radio station Tuks FM joined forces with national broadcaster Metro FM for a special World Radio Day simulcast.
Broadcasting live from the University of Pretoria’s Hatfield Campus, the collaborative programme blended the vibrant energy of community radio with the expansive reach of commercial broadcasting.
Blending Community and Commercial Radio
The joint broadcast brought together breakfast show teams from both stations, creating a unique on-air experience. Metro FM personalities DJ Sabby and Owen Hanie shared the microphone with Tuks FM contributors, including newsreader Ilitha Nonkonyana.
“Metro FM’s Programme Manager contacted us to explore the idea of a simulcast for World Radio Day… The day offers an opportunity to do something different with the medium,” said Nicole da Silva, Tuks FM Station Manager.
Authenticity in the Age of AI
To mark the occasion, a dedicated lounge-style studio was set up at Tuks FM to host the joint programme. According to Da Silva, the collaboration aimed to address the 2026 World Radio Day theme surrounding radio and artificial intelligence.
“The intention was to create a shared on-air moment that celebrated radio… at the same time, we wanted to keep the sound authentic and human-led,” Da Silva explained.
Training the Next Generation
For Tuks FM, which is celebrating 45 years on air this year, the partnership served as a vital educational opportunity for student volunteers.
“For our student volunteers, the collaboration provided a valuable opportunity to experience commercial radio in action. It also allowed new audiences to engage with what Tuks FM is,” Da Silva added.
As a renowned training ground for media talent, Tuks FM has produced prominent industry figures such as Anele Mdoda, Ayanda MVP, and Jodell Tantij.
