Unisa Radio 20th anniversary

As the world celebrated World Radio Day on 13 February, Unisa Radio marked a monumental milestone: 20 years of broadcasting excellence, community empowerment, and educational outreach.

Established within the University of South Africa (UNISA), the station has evolved from a fledgling campus initiative into a trusted, knowledge-driven platform that bridges theory and practice while amplifying student voices.

A Catalyst for Knowledge and Development

Unisa Radio has leveraged the power of the medium to advance crucial conversations around digital transformation, innovation, and skills development. Its contribution extends beyond entertainment, fostering:

  • Educational Outreach: Aligning content with UNISA’s academic mission.
  • Social Cohesion: Promoting cultural diversity and freedom of expression.
  • Youth Empowerment: Nurturing media talent and providing a platform for student voices.

Of the People, For the People

Looking ahead, Programmes Manager Tumelo Makgoara emphasized the station’s commitment to community development and social gains.

“The mandate is to provide social gains and foster community development… As the saying goes, we are ‘of the people, for the people, by the people’,” Makgoara stated.

Makgoara highlighted ambitious future plans, including acquiring a local frequency to make the station accessible to listeners in their homes and cars. Currently, the station is actively engaging in community service through a Back-to-School Charity Drive in partnership with the City of Tshwane, donating school shoes and stationery to underprivileged primary schools.

Embracing the Future: Radio and AI

Positioning itself at the forefront of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Unisa Radio integrates digital platforms, social media, and interactive content to remain relevant in a rapidly changing technological landscape.

Here is to 20 years of storytelling, innovation, and unwavering service to the community.
