The 21-year-old Bafana Bafana defender made a composed comeback from injury, and MLS has noticed. Its own report highlights his range, strength and impact on Chicago’s backline
Mbekezeli Mbokazi is making a strong case as one of the best defenders in Major League Soccer. The Bafana Bafana and Chicago Fire centre-back has been singled out by the league itself after his first appearance back from injury.
Mbokazi joined Chicago from Orlando Pirates in January and has quickly become a key figure in their defence. At the weekend, he returned to the side for a 1-0 win over Charlotte FC, helping the Fire keep a clean sheet.
What MLS said
An MLS report stressed how much he contributes to Chicago’s defensive setup, noting that the same was true for South Africa during his performances at this summer’s FIFA World Cup. It pointed to his elite defensive range and his ability to sweep up danger behind the backline. Against a Charlotte side keen to counter-attack, the report said he made it his mission to shut down their quick transitions, combining pace with the strength to win the ball.
Why it matters
The timing is good for both club and country. Chicago get another defensive option as the season enters its decisive stage, and Bafana will be encouraged by his development ahead of the November AFCON qualifiers against Kenya.
