In a major win for the South African “hard-tech” sector, Urobo Biotech, a spin-out from Stellenbosch University (SU), has been crowned the champion of the 2026 SWEAT Africa pitch competition.

Competing against a formidable field of African startups, the biotech firm secured the R100,000 grand prize during the high-octane, two-day event held at the Bertha Retreat. The gathering brought together over 100 innovators and 50 global investors, marking a pivotal moment for the continent’s burgeoning startup ecosystem.

Turning Waste into Wealth: The Winning Innovation

Urobo Biotech’s success lies in its revolutionary approach to the circular economy. The company utilizes specialized enzymes to break down bioplastic waste, converting it back into high-value circular chemicals.

Dominique Rocher, co-founder of Urobo Biotech, highlighted that the funding is a strategic catalyst for their next phase:

  • Commercial Scaling: Moving current pilot programs into full-scale commercial sales.
  • Technical Capacity: Expanding local lab capabilities to strengthen South Africa’s biotech footprint.
  • Environmental Impact: Reducing operational costs for waste managers while diverted plastics from landfills.

“The SU ecosystem—including LaunchLab and Innovus—enabled us to refine our strategy and validate our technology. This win accelerates our ability to deploy solutions that actually reduce environmental impact,” Rocher noted.

Stellenbosch University’s Innovation Footprint

The event served as a showcase for SU’s Vision 2040, which prioritizes purposeful partnerships and the translation of research into real-world impact. While Urobo took the top spot, other SU spin-outs also made significant waves:

  • ReSurfify: Ranked in the Top 10 of the biotech and hard-tech competition.
  • Nanosene: Featured as a breakthrough deep-tech innovator during the BRAIP (Bridging Research and Innovation) Accelerator session.

Prof. Deresh Ramjugernath, SU Rector and Vice-Chancellor, emphasized the university’s role as more than just an academic institution:

“Innovation does not happen in isolation. Universities must actively help translate research into investable ventures. SWEAT Africa connects talent and ideas across the continent.”

What is SWEAT Africa?

Co-founded by Prof. Tulio de Oliveira (Director of CERI), SWEAT Africa is designed to move beyond the “standard pitch deck.” It is a platform for honest dialogue about building, failing, and scaling across African borders. The 2026 edition featured the SWEAT Equity Programme, specifically designed to introduce young innovators to the mechanics of entrepreneurship and ecosystem building.
