South African star Thuso Mbedu has treated fans to an exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpse into the making of the fantasy epic Children of Blood and Bone. Shot on location in South Africa, the production offers a rare peek into the craftsmanship bringing the mythical West African kingdom of Orïsha to life.
Taking to social media, Mbedu unveiled a featurette highlighting the film’s detailed world-building—from intricate costume designs and character makeup to set construction and director insights.
“I’m super excited to be part of something as big as this,” Mbedu shared in the featurette. “I’m still processing how I feel—this was supposed to remain a dream, but now it’s a reality. This is not something I was supposed to be able to achieve considering where I come from. We will continue to strive for better in the film industry.”
An All-Star Cast Bringing Orïsha to Life
Helmed by critically acclaimed director Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King) and based on Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling YA fantasy novel, the storyline follows Zélie (played by Mbedu), a brave young woman on a perilous quest to restore magic to her oppressed people.
Joining Mbedu in the rebellion against the ruthless King Saran (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is an ensemble cast featuring:

- Amandla Stenberg as Princess Amari
- Damson Idris as Prince Inan
- Viola Davis as Mama Agba (marking her second major collaboration with Mbedu following The Woman King)
