Pitso Mosimane is reportedly on the verge of making a sensational return to the Bafana Bafana hot seat after reaching an agreement over the financial terms of his proposed appointment.
According to a report by SoccerBeat, Mosimane and the South African Football Association (SAFA) have agreed on the terms of his return, with an improved salary package reportedly bringing his remuneration in line with the deal previously held by former coach Hugo Broos.
The development could finally bring an end to the uncertainty surrounding South Africa’s national team coaching position, with Mosimane now reportedly preparing to take charge of Bafana Bafana once again.
Important: The appointment and salary agreement are being reported rather than confirmed through an official SAFA announcement at the time of writing.
Pitso Mosimane set for Bafana Bafana comeback
If the reports are confirmed, Mosimane would return to the national team with considerable experience behind him.
The Kagiso-born coach previously served as Bafana Bafana head coach and has since built one of the most decorated coaching careers in African football. His potential return would therefore represent a major moment for South African football.
Mosimane is reportedly expected to get to work quickly, with a preliminary squad potentially set to be announced as preparations begin for the next phase of Bafana Bafana’s international campaign.
The coach would also inherit a team coming off an important period under Hugo Broos. Broos’ tenure saw South Africa win a bronze medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
A decorated coach returns to the spotlight
Mosimane’s reputation means expectations would immediately be high.
During his hugely successful spell with Mamelodi Sundowns, he won multiple domestic trophies and guided the club to the 2016 CAF Champions League title.
His achievements continued during his time in Egypt with Al Ahly, where he won back-to-back CAF Champions League titles in 2020 and 2021. He also guided the Egyptian giants to FIFA Club World Cup bronze medals.
His coaching career has also included success in Saudi Arabia, where he won the Saudi First Division League with Al Ahli.
That continental record makes Mosimane one of the most accomplished South African coaches of his generation.
What comes next for Bafana Bafana?
A return to the national team would place Mosimane under immediate pressure to build on the progress made in recent years.
Reports indicate that his first major challenge could be the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, with Bafana Bafana preparing for matches against Guinea and Eritrea.
The appointment would also generate significant excitement among South African football supporters, many of whom have long called for Mosimane to return to the national setup.
For now, the football world awaits confirmation from SAFA. But if the latest reports prove accurate, “Jingles” could soon be back in the Bafana Bafana dugout.
