Ghampani Lungu has made a stunning start at Orlando Pirates, scoring four goals and providing one assist in seven appearances before suffering an injury.

Ghampani Lungu has wasted no time making an impression at Orlando Pirates, scoring four goals in his first seven appearances for the Buccaneers.

The Zambian winger arrived ahead of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign and has quickly emerged as one of the club’s most exciting attacking options.

Lungu making an immediate impact

Lungu announced himself on his Pirates debut against Durban City in the MTN8 quarter-finals.

Despite playing just 23 minutes after coming off the bench, he scored the decisive goal to send Pirates through to the next round.

He followed that up with another goal in his next appearance, capitalising on a goalkeeping mistake before firing a powerful long-range effort into the net.

His goalscoring form continued in the Betway Premiership. Against Chippa United, Lungu displayed his movement inside the final third before calmly finishing to open the scoring in Pirates’ 3-0 victory.

His fourth goal came against newly promoted Kruger United at Mbombela Stadium. After Kamogelo Sebelebele won an early penalty, Lungu stepped up and confidently sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.

With four goals and one assist in seven matches, the Zambian international has quickly become one of Pirates’ biggest attacking threats.

Pirates dealt injury blow

However, Lungu’s outstanding start was overshadowed by a worrying injury against Kruger United.

The winger was forced off shortly after scoring, with early assessments pointing towards a potentially serious muscle problem.

The injury comes at an unfortunate time for Pirates as they chase silverware across multiple competitions and look to build on their strong attacking start.

For the Buccaneers, the biggest hope will be that Lungu’s injury is not as serious as feared and that the winger can return soon.

His early numbers have certainly made an impression: seven appearances, four goals and one assist.

If he can maintain that level once fit, Lungu could prove to be one of Pirates’ most important signings of the season.
